A capital hit before dawn

Russia launched a combined missile-and-drone assault on Kyiv overnight on July 6, killing at least 15 people in the capital and surrounding region and wounding dozens more, Ukrainian officials saidkyivindependent +1. Residential buildings were hit in several districts, including Podilskyi, Obolonskyi, Holosiivskyi and Darnytskyi, while emergency crews searched damaged high-rises for survivorskyivindependent +1. The strike came four days after another deadly attack on Kyiv and on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey, where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to press allies for more air-defense supportkyivindependent +1. Ballistic missiles expose the air-defense gap

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia fired 68 missiles and 351 drones in the attack, including 23 Iskander-M or S-400 ballistic missiles, six Zircon missiles, 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles and six Kalibr cruise missilesenglish +1. Ukrainian forces reported downing or suppressing 37 missiles and 326 drones, but said 29 ballistic missiles and 18 drones struck 34 locationskyivindependent +1.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s defenders performed well against drones and cruise missiles but lacked enough Patriot interceptors to stop the ballistic weaponskyivindependent +1. The appeal shifts to allied stockpiles

The civilian toll sharpened Kyiv’s message before the summit: move Patriot missiles from allied warehouses to Ukrainian launchers. Zelenskyy said U.S. and European partners had enough strength to stop the attacks and warned that unused interceptors only encourage Russia to keep striking residential buildingsabcnews +1.

The attack also disrupted communities beyond the city limits. Officials reported deaths and injuries in Kyiv Oblast, evacuations in Vyshneve because of the risk of secondary detonations, and damage to homes, businesses and civilian infrastructure in Bucha, Vyshhorod and Brovary districtskyivindependent +1.
