U.S. authorities said they seized more than 1,000 internet domains accused of streaming FIFA World Cup matches without authorization, expanding a tournament-long crackdown that earlier targeted nearly 400 sites. The Justice Department announced the latest total Monday, saying the domains were taken down across three actions under “Operation Offsides” and involved investigations by Homeland Security Investigations in Washington and the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center.[0]

The new figure points to a broader anti-piracy campaign around the 2026 tournament, which was hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment said the operation seized more than 1,000 websites and blocked 1,970 domains over a 30-day period, with 14 partners working across 54 countries and more than 3,000 leads submitted by public- and private-sector groups.ndtvprofit

Earlier in the sweep, U.S. officials said domains and servers linked to illegal streams were targeted in Peru and Bulgaria, with additional disruptions in Croatia, Romania, Poland and Colombia.tomshardware FIFA, NBCUniversal, beIN Media Group, Warner Bros., the Motion Picture Association’s ACE coalition and UFC were among the organizations that helped identify suspected domains, according to reporting on the court-backed seizures.therecord +1

Officials framed the case as both a copyright action and a consumer-safety warning. Eric Weindorf, special agent in charge of HSI’s Washington office, said illegal streaming sites can expose viewers to malware, unsecured connections and risks to personal or financial data.wvnews +1

The sweep also reflects the stakes around live sports rights, where piracy sites can move quickly during global events and monetize traffic through ads, subscriptions or other commercial arrangements. ACE said the campaign disrupted platforms exploiting demand for World Cup coverage while diverting viewers from licensed broadcasters and services.ndtvprofit
