A promising half comes apart

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2–0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, turning a goalless first half into a defeat that left United without a win in nine matches in all competitions. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute before Cole Palmer converted a penalty after United defender Lisandro Martínez was sent off.chelseafc +1

United had the better of the first half but failed to take their chances. Both sides had goals ruled out for offside: Estevão’s for Chelsea and Matheus Cunha’s for United. Amad Diallo also missed opportunities for the visitors, who restored captain Bruno Fernandes to the starting lineup.chelseafc +1

The foul that changed the contest

Five minutes after the break, Romeo Lavia won possession in midfield and Rogers drove through the United defence, lifting his finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens. United’s task became harder when Martínez picked up a first yellow card for fouling Rogers.chelseafc +1

At a Chelsea corner, Martínez struck Wesley Fofana in the face with a raised arm. After a video review, referee Peter Bankes awarded a penalty and showed Martínez a second yellow, leaving United with 10 players. Palmer scored from the spot in the 64th minute. Estevão later had another goal disallowed for offside.chelseafc +1

Two very different league positions

The result left United with seven points from nine league matches, just above the relegation zone. Reuters reported that Chelsea climbed to fourth with 16 points, while United’s winless streak stretched across league and European competition.reuters +1

For Palmer, the penalty was his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea in his 105th appearance. Sky Sports reported that only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Diego Costa reached that mark for the club faster.skysports
