Onsemi’s $600 million AI deal is a long-term bet, not a quick earnings boost
Onsemi agreed to buy power-management specialist Ferric for $600 million in cash plus possible milestone payments, while raising its long-term AI data-center revenue target.
A deal with a delayed payoff
Chipmaker onsemi agreed on Monday to buy Ferric for $600 million in cash, betting that its power-management technology can help supply the next generation of AI processors. Up to another $175 million is contingent on revenue milestones. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, but onsemi says it will have no meaningful near-term financial impact.stocktitan
Onsemi raised its 2030 AI data-center revenue target by $500 million to more than $3 billion after the agreement. That is a goal, not contracted revenue. The company’s filing says the extra payments depend on specified revenue targets through 2029.stocktitan +1
Moving power closer to the chip
Ferric makes integrated voltage regulators, which control power close to a processor. As AI chips draw more power, the aim is to reduce losses and respond quickly when their needs change. The company also works on thin-film magnetic inductors, components used in power conversion.superpowerdaily +1
Onsemi says Ferric’s design combines several components in one package and can use 50% to 70% less circuit-board area than conventional arrangements built from separate parts. That comparison is the buyer’s claim, not an independently established performance result. About 50 Ferric employees are expected to join onsemi.stocktitan +1
AI grows from a smaller base
The acquisition announcement accompanied onsemi’s third-quarter results. AI data-center revenue rose to $180.2 million from $65.6 million a year earlier, but the business remained much smaller than automotive, which generated $776.7 million, down from $787.3 million. Total revenue rose 11% to $1.72 billion in the quarter ended October 2.stocktitan
Onsemi forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $1.715 billion to $1.815 billion. The midpoint was above the analyst consensus cited by StockStory. Even so, the shares fell in extended trading after the results and deal announcement; Benzinga reported a decline of about 4.6%. The market move alone does not establish why investors sold.benzinga +1
The proposed purchase is still subject to closing conditions. Its financial test will come later: whether Ferric’s technology wins enough sales to meet the milestones and support the larger 2030 target.stocktitan +1
