A near-total shadow crosses the night

Skywatchers across much of the Western Hemisphere can watch a deep partial lunar eclipse overnight on August 27-28, 2026. At maximum, 96.2% of the lunar surface will sit inside Earth’s dark umbral shadow, leaving a narrow bright sliver while the rest may glow reddish orange.google The broad event runs for about five hours and 38 minutes, although the most dramatic partial phase is considerably shorter.google

The eclipse begins at 9:23 p.m. EDT on August 27, when the Moon enters Earth’s faint outer shadow. The visible partial phase starts at 10:33 p.m. EDT, and maximum eclipse arrives at about 12:12 a.m. EDT, or 04:12 UTC, on August 28.google Local dates and clock times vary, with observers in Colombia seeing the event from Thursday night into early Friday.google

Geography will shape the view

North and South America are well placed for the show, while observers in Europe and Africa can also see at least part of it.google The Moon will rise already eclipsed in some locations and set before the sequence finishes in others, making an open horizon important. City-level timing tools can show whether the Moon will be above the horizon during maximum eclipse.google

Cloud cover is the main obstacle. No protective glasses are needed for a lunar eclipse, and the event is safe to watch with unaided eyes. Binoculars or a small telescope can make Earth’s curved shadow and the contrast between the bright rim and darker lunar surface easier to see.

Why the darkened Moon may look red

The color comes from sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere before it reaches the Moon. Shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly, while red and orange light bends through the atmosphere and illuminates the portion inside Earth’s shadow.google The result can range from a dim brown to copper or deep red, depending on atmospheric conditions such as dust, smoke and clouds around Earth’s limb.

Despite the “blood moon” nickname, this is not a total eclipse: a thin section remains outside the umbra even at maximum.google That bright edge may make the contrast especially sharp. The unusually deep coverage is why the event should look more dramatic than a typical partial eclipse, with nearly the entire disk darkened at once.google
