HPE’s AI boom is running into a very ordinary problem: not enough parts
HPE’s quarterly sales and outlook jumped as AI infrastructure demand accelerated, but supply constraints are leaving orders ahead of revenue.
Record sales, record backlog
Hewlett Packard Enterprise reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $12.2 billion for the period ended July 31, up 34% from a year earlier. GAAP diluted earnings were $1.06 a share; non-GAAP earnings reached $1.11, while free cash flow rose to $958 million. hpe +1
The more revealing number was the gap between demand and shipments. HPE said orders grew 42% on a normalized basis, faster than revenue, producing a record backlog. Networking revenue rose 74.9% to $2.9 billion, while Cloud & AI revenue increased 25.4% to $9.0 billion. hpe +1
The constraint is supply, not customers
HPE executives told analysts that DDR5 memory, NAND flash and wafer capacity are limiting how quickly the company can turn orders into sales. Networking orders rose 36% while normalized networking revenue grew 10%; HPE has more than doubled networking purchase commitments to improve conversion. Reuters reported that the supply concerns initially weighed on investors; Bloomberg later reported that shares reversed course and closed 5% higher. reuters +1
That matters because the surge is not limited to experimental AI projects. HPE said AI-systems orders reached $2.4 billion, up more than 30% sequentially, and that customers are moving from pilots toward production workloads such as inference and agentic applications. The company’s transcript also records a multibillion-dollar server deal for a customer using inference internally, rather than selling cloud capacity. fool +1
A higher bar for execution
HPE raised its fiscal 2026 revenue-growth outlook to 34%–37%, its networking-growth outlook to 73%–74% and its free-cash-flow target to at least $3.75 billion. It also set a fiscal 2027 revenue-growth framework of 13%–17% and free cash flow of at least $5 billion. hpe +1
Those are forecasts, not booked sales. HPE said gross margin should moderate as AI systems become a larger share of shipments, and its filing warns that component availability and supplier execution could materially affect results. sec The next test is straightforward: whether long-term supply agreements convert the backlog into fourth-quarter revenue without eroding margins.
