Profit beat, thinner margin

India’s largest power producer, NTPC, reported a 14.3% rise in standalone net profit for the July–September quarter on Saturday, beating analysts’ expectations even as a key operating margin narrowed.cnbctv18 +1

Profit at the parent company rose to ₹5,320 crore from ₹4,653 crore a year earlier, while revenue increased 16.8% to ₹45,752 crore. Both figures topped a CNBC-TV18 survey of analysts, which had expected profit of ₹5,031 crore and revenue of ₹43,192 crore.cnbctv18

But earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, grew more slowly than revenue: up 8.7% to ₹10,891 crore. The EBITDA margin fell to 24% from 26% and missed the survey’s 29% expectation. That means the parent retained a smaller share of its sales on that operating measure, despite generating more profit overall.cnbctv18

Stronger demand, faster-running plants

Bloomberg reported that hotter, drier weather associated with El Niño boosted electricity demand for cooling and irrigation. NTPC’s commercial generation rose 11.1% to 92.413 billion units in the quarter, according to The Hindu. Its reported plant load factor—a measure of how intensively capacity is used—rose to 73.53% from 66.01% a year earlier.thehindu +1

The larger group grew more quickly than the parent alone. Total consolidated profit, including non-controlling interests, rose to ₹7,351 crore from ₹5,225 crore. Profit attributable to NTPC’s shareholders was ₹7,030 crore, up from ₹5,067 crore; these are different measures, not conflicting estimates of the same number.aninews

Spending and a dividend ahead

The board declared an interim dividend of ₹3 per share, with November 6 as the record date and payments scheduled to begin November 25. The group spent ₹23,932 crore on capital projects in the first half of the financial year, up from ₹23,115 crore a year earlier.aninews +1

Expansion also faces a bottleneck. On the earnings call, NTPC’s renewable-energy chief said delays to transmission connections in the Khavda region had pushed back the start of commercial operations for some capacity by more than a year. He said work on projects for the next three financial years was continuing, but some capacity cannot begin commercial operation until connections are available.investing
