A comeback with a chaotic finish

Matheus Cunha scored twice in three minutes as Manchester United overturned a 2–0 halftime deficit to beat Roma 3–2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Champions League victory ended United’s nine-game winless run, but the forward did not stay on the pitch to see it out.reuters +1

Cunha equalised in the 83rd minute after Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi failed to clear the ball. Three minutes later, substitute Shea Lacey found him with a pass, and the Brazilian drove a shot in off the near post. Cunha took off his shirt and celebrated in the crowd, earning a yellow card; a late challenge on Balerdi brought a second booking in stoppage time. United held on with 10 men.theguardian +1

A penalty gives United a way back

Roma had taken control early. Matías Soulé finished Rodrigo Mora’s pass in the 11th minute, and Donyell Malen converted a penalty after Ayden Heaven handled Soulé’s shot. United left the field to boos at halftime.reuters +1

The home side’s route back also came from the spot. Cunha won a penalty, but Devis Vásquez saved Bruno Fernandes’s first attempt. The referee ordered a retake for encroachment, and Fernandes scored in the 58th minute.skysports +1

United kept pushing: Bryan Mbeumo hit both posts with one shot, while a Diogo Dalot effort was cleared off the line. Roma had no shot after halftime, according to beIN Sports’ match analysis.skysports +1

Relief, not a reset

The result was United’s second win in four Champions League league-phase matches, lifting them to 17th in the table, the BBC reported. Their domestic position remains more difficult: they are also 17th in the Premier League, with one win from nine games.bbc

The win eased pressure on head coach Michael Carrick but did not erase the poor run that preceded it. United’s next Premier League match is at home to Aston Villa on Sunday.theguardian +1
