NASA’s Roman Telescope Begins Million-Mile Journey to Map Cosmos
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched aboard a Falcon Heavy, beginning a three-month journey to L2. Its panoramic infrared surveys will target dark matter, dark energy and thousands of distant worlds.

A clean departure from Florida
NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off from Kennedy Space Center at 7:26 a.m. EDT Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. The launch starts a roughly three-month trip to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, about one million miles from Earth, where Roman will share the broad orbital neighborhood used by the James Webb Space Telescope. A wide-angle census of the universe
Roman’s 7.9-foot mirror matches Hubble’s diameter, but its Wide Field Instrument can capture a patch of sky more than 100 times larger in a single view. That combination of speed and sharp infrared imaging is intended to map billions of galaxies and trace how matter is distributed across cosmic time. Repeated surveys of exploding stars and the bending of light by gravity could sharpen measurements of dark energy, the unknown driver associated with the universe’s accelerating expansion, while producing a three-dimensional map of dark matter.cnn
The telescope will also conduct a vast census of planets beyond the solar system. The mission now shifts to commissioning
Launch success removes one major risk, but Roman is not yet an operating observatory. Teams must deploy its high-gain antenna and aperture cover, make two course corrections, activate the 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument and calibrate the spacecraft after it reaches L2.nasa The five-year prime mission is expected to generate 1.4 terabytes of raw science data each day, with processed observations made public for professional and citizen scientists.npr
Roman also carries a JPL-built coronagraph that will suppress starlight and attempt to image Jupiter-like planets.
