MoMA, Pompidou and M+ plan a shared collection—but first major loans wait until late 2027

A pact across three continents

The directors of MoMA, Centre Pompidou and M+ signed a framework agreement at M+ in Hong Kong on Oct. 30, creating a three-way cultural alliance. The institutions plan to share collection displays, develop exhibitions and programs together, and collaborate on curatorial research and conservation. press +1

This is a long-term operating arrangement, not a merger: the museums say each will retain its independence and identity. ARTnews describes the model as treating their holdings as a shared collection, with curators across the three cities shaping how objects are presented. The partners say their combined reach is about 10 million in-person visits and 125 million online visits a year. artnews +1

Loans are the first visible test

The first major moves are planned for MoMA. A selection of works from M+ is expected in MoMA’s collection galleries in late 2027, followed by a long-term Centre Pompidou gallery in 2028; similar plans are being developed at the other institutions. artnews M+ will also begin integrating works from MoMA and the Pompidou into its exhibitions over the next 18 months, according to the South China Morning Post. scmp

That exchange gives MoMA access to M+’s roughly 8,000-object collection, including a notable body of contemporary Chinese art. artnews Centre Pompidou’s building is closed for a five-year renovation and scheduled to reopen in 2030. artforum The alliance emphasizes extended loans and sustained collaboration rather than the usual short-term blockbuster tour. scmp

One exhibition, three collections

Over the next five years, the museums plan to co-organize an exhibition examining what “the contemporary” means, drawing from all three collections and showing it at each institution. They also plan to add curators from M+ and Centre Pompidou to MoMA’s C-MAP research program, which studies modern and contemporary art histories beyond North America and Western Europe. artnews

A joint steering committee will set priorities for exhibitions, loans, research, conservation and professional development. ARTnews reports that it will meet monthly, with its first in-person meeting scheduled for next month at MoMA. The museum leaders say the alliance will extend access to their collections while preserving each museum’s distinct identity. artnews +1

The next milestone is a list of works

The framework sets the direction, but the announcements do not name which objects will travel first. The immediate test is whether the partners can turn a shared curatorial plan into works visitors can actually see, beginning with M+ loans at MoMA in late 2027. artnews +1
