Anthropic closes the gap on OpenAI as enterprise share flips

The pecking order is tightening
Twelve months ago OpenAI looked uncatchable in enterprise AI. It no longer does. New Enterprise Technology Research data published by the Wall Street Journal shows Claude's share of enterprises that use and plan to keep using an AI model jumped from 21% to 48%, while OpenAI slipped from 62% to 56% — compressing its lead over Anthropic from 41 percentage points to just eight.saastr Google's Gemini climbed from 27% to 40% in the same window, and coding assistants are the workload driving the surge.saastr Anthropic now counts more than 300,000 business customers, up from fewer than 1,000 two years ago, with $100,000-plus accounts growing more than sevenfold in a year.cnbc
A 'code red' inside OpenAI
On December 1, Sam Altman sent staff a "code red" memo ordering OpenAI to pull back on health, shopping and advertising bets and refocus on ChatGPT, which still has more than 800 million weekly users but is leaking consumer mindshare to Google's Gemini 3.cnbc Ten days later the company shipped GPT-5.2 in Instant, Thinking and Pro tiers, pitched explicitly at developers and "production-grade" agentic workloads — territory where Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5 has dominated coding leaderboards.techcrunch OpenAI's own benchmark slides showed GPT-5.2 Thinking edging both Gemini 3 and Claude Opus 4.5 on SWE-Bench Pro, GPQA Diamond and the ARC-AGI suite, with 38% fewer errors than its predecessor.techcrunch The catch: reasoning models burn more compute, and OpenAI is now paying most of its inference bill in cash rather than cloud credits, against $1.4 trillion in infrastructure commitments and a roughly $20 billion annualized revenue run rate.cnbc +1
Cloud alliances harden the battle lines
The rivalry has now been hard-wired into the hyperscaler stack. On November 18, Microsoft, Nvidia and Anthropic announced a three-way pact in which Anthropic committed to $30 billion of Azure compute, while Nvidia and Microsoft pledged to invest up to $10 billion and $5 billion respectively in the Claude maker.microsoft Claude Sonnet 4.5, Opus 4.1 and Haiku 4.5 are coming to Microsoft Foundry and will keep flowing through GitHub Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot, making Claude the only frontier model available across AWS, Google Cloud and Azure simultaneously.microsoft OpenAI remains Microsoft's anchor partner, but Redmond's biggest customer is no longer its only one — and for the first time, Anthropic gets to fight OpenAI on its own home turf.microsoft
