A statewide response before the temperature peaks

California has prepositioned 30 fire engines, four bulldozers, two helicopters and about 230 personnel as an intense heat dome spreads across the West. The equipment and crews were sent to eight counties, including Los Angeles, Riverside, Fresno and El Dorado, for elevated fire weather forecast from July 31 through August 3.gov The State Operations Center has also moved to an enhanced watch, with 40 staff coordinating the response.gov

The mobilization comes as nearly 50 million people across the West face heat alerts. Heat, fire and surf hazards converge

California’s immediate challenge is not temperature alone. Officials said hot, dry weather is raising the chance that a human-caused spark becomes a fast-moving wildfire, while large swells generated by offshore storm activity could reach 11 feet along parts of the Southern California coast.gov State lifeguards have carried out 3,600 rescues and more than 1,600 medical responses since July 1.gov

The wildfire backdrop is mixed.
