Samsung’s U.S. job cuts turn Texas HQ move into restructuring test
Samsung Electronics America is cutting or relocating hundreds of U.S. consumer-electronics workers as it shifts its headquarters from New Jersey to Texas, with a New Jersey WARN notice listing 739 affected roles.

Samsung Electronics America’s planned shift of its consumer-electronics headquarters from New Jersey to Texas is now tied to one of the larger U.S. tech workforce moves of the week: 739 positions at its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, site are listed in a WARN notice, while the company says many affected workers have been offered relocation rather than a straight layoff. The affected unit handles U.S. sales and marketing for Samsung phones, displays, televisions and home appliances, separate from the company’s semiconductor business. Local reporting says the Englewood Cliffs office employed about 1,200 people, making the WARN figure equal to more than 60% of that site’s workforce. Samsung has said the move could change its workforce structure for employees who cannot relocate or for roles being streamlined around business priorities. reuters
The cuts also appear to extend beyond New Jersey. Reuters-linked coverage and follow-on reporting say roughly 100 workers were let go at Samsung’s Plano, Texas, office, including people in the mobile division, bringing the total affected U.S. headcount to more than 800. Samsung has pushed back on describing the shift as a broad global restructuring of its consumer-products business. yahoo
The timing shows the split inside Samsung’s portfolio. Its chip operation is benefiting from AI-driven memory demand and a much stronger profit cycle, while consumer devices face tougher margins and heavier competition. MLQ also noted a separate Samsung SDS America WARN notice covering 179 Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, roles, though Samsung framed that as tied to the affiliate’s own headquarters move rather than the same restructuring. communitynews
For New Jersey, the optics are especially awkward: Samsung’s Englewood Cliffs campus opened less than a year ago after a long run in Ridgefield Park. For Texas, the move deepens Samsung’s U.S. footprint around Plano and its existing chip operations in the state, but the company will still have to persuade employees that relocation is a better option than exit. mlq
