ING missed quarterly profit estimates. It still announced €1.9 billion for shareholders

ING's third-quarter net profit rose 3.5% to €1.85 billion but missed analyst estimates, as the Dutch lender unveiled a €1.9 billion shareholder distribution and plans to cut about 400 wholesale-banking jobs.

A stronger year-over-year result still fell short

ING reported net profit of €1.85 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, up from €1.79 billion a year earlier but below the €1.97 billion analyst consensus cited by Reuters. Total income also fell short of forecasts, despite rising 5.6% year over year to €6.23 billion. reuters +1

Higher credit costs and weaker income from market-sensitive activities helped weigh on the result. Loan-loss provisions climbed 23.6% year over year to €403 million; ING said €111 million reflected a management overlay ahead of an accounting-model update, rather than deterioration in the underlying project-finance portfolio. Other income fell 37.4% to €602 million, with the bank pointing to interest-rate volatility and lower Treasury results. ing

On the earnings call, ING’s chief risk officer described the overlay as anticipatory, while executives said the volatile hedging effects were accounting-related and expected to reverse over time. Those explanations do not erase the shortfall, but they help separate it from a broader claim that the bank’s loan book suddenly worsened. reuters +1

A large return of capital, backed by a 13.3% capital ratio

The bank paired the results with an additional €1.9 billion distribution: a share buyback of up to €1.65 billion and a €250 million cash payment scheduled for January 2027. ING said it had reserved the quarter’s net profit outside its core equity Tier 1 capital, leaving its reported CET1 ratio at 13.3%, above its target of about 13%. reuters +1

That context matters: the payout is a capital-allocation decision, not evidence that the earnings miss was immaterial. Reuters reported that ING’s profit and total income both missed consensus, while Bloomberg likewise reported a profit shortfall and higher credit provisions. reuters +1

The bank is paying now to reshape wholesale banking

ING also plans to refocus its wholesale-banking business under the name Corporate and Institutional Banking. The changes are expected to take effect in March 2027 and lead to around 400 redundancies globally. The bank expects to book a €175 million pretax restructuring provision in the fourth quarter, with annual cost reductions of about €75 million fully in place from 2028. ing +1

The proposed savings arrive well after the restructuring charge, making the near-term bill visible before the full benefit. ING’s earnings-call transcript describes the move as an effort to simplify the business and change how it serves large corporate clients; Dow Jones reported the provision and savings timetable alongside the buyback. morningstar +1

The next test is whether ING can meet its reaffirmed 2026 outlook while absorbing the planned provision and delivering the promised cost reductions. ing
