A combative past follows Lake to the hearing room

Kari Lake appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on June 18, 2026, for her confirmation hearing as President Donald Trump's nominee for U.S. ambassador to Jamaica — and almost immediately found herself back in the political fights she had waged in Arizona.12news Lake lost the 2022 governor's race to Democrat Katie Hobbs and the 2024 Senate race to Ruben Gallego before Trump appointed her to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media, a role a federal judge later ruled she held illegally.kjzz She was the de facto CEO of USAGM until a March court ruling struck down her mass firings at Voice of America and ordered journalists back to work.kjzz

During her 2024 Senate campaign, Lake repeatedly accused Gallego of being controlled by drug cartels based on his estranged father's criminal history — a charge she made without evidence.azcentral Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, pressed her on it directly. "You had no evidence then, nor do you have any evidence now that our colleague, Senator Gallego, is controlled by cartels. Do you, Miss Lake?" Kaine asked.azcentral Lake said her campaign had "provided receipts" but when Kaine pushed further she admitted she did not know — and declined to apologize. "I don't believe my charge was wrong," she said.12news

VOA cuts and a disputed résumé

Democrats also hammered Lake over her tenure at USAGM. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-New Hampshire, focused specifically on Lake's decision to slash jobs at Voice of America — including at VOA Persia — just before the United States and Israel attacked Iran.kjzz "Your limitation of our ability to transmit information to Iran was egregious," Murphy said.azcentral Lake disputed Democrats' characterization of her actions and claimed her team was producing "the best news product we've ever done."kjzz

The hearing also renewed scrutiny of a claim that Lake won two Billboard music awards — a line that appeared on her formal certificate of competency for the Jamaica post. The producer of the song in question told local media Lake did not win such an award, and she did not address the discrepancy during the hearing.azcentral

Republicans praise Lake as Trump ally

Republican senators offered a markedly different assessment. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, called Lake "a true champion of truth, of accountability, of the U.S. Constitution and of the freedoms we all enjoy as Americans."kjzz Lake presented herself as an enthusiastic advocate for Jamaica, telling the committee she has visited the country "too many times to count" over the past 35 years and spent her honeymoon there.kjzz +1 She pledged to prioritize natural disaster preparedness, security cooperation, and expanding American business investment in the country.kjzz

The committee did not take a vote on Lake's nomination at the close of Thursday's hearing.kjzz
