A foundry conversation moves into view

Anthropic has begun early-stage work on a custom artificial intelligence chip and has held talks with Samsung Electronics about manufacturing it, according to reports that cited people familiar with the discussionstheinformation +1. The plan is still undefined: the company has not settled what workloads the processor would run, how powerful it would be, or how it would fit inside a servertechcrunch +1. KED Global, citing The Information, reported that Samsung is being considered as a potential manufacturing partner for the Claude developerkedglobal.

The talks would put Anthropic closer to a path already taken by cloud providers and rival AI labs: designing more of the compute stack around their own models instead of buying only general-purpose accelerators. TechCrunch reported that Anthropic said chips from Google, Amazon and Nvidia will remain central to its diversified hardware strategy, while declining to add more on a possible Samsung dealtechcrunch.

The chip economics are driving the shift

AI companies are under pressure to secure cheaper and more predictable compute as model training and inference demand expand. SiliconANGLE reported that custom accelerators can be tuned for broad training and inference workloads, or for narrower inference tasks, giving large AI operators a way to improve efficiency if volume is high enoughsiliconangle. The same report said Samsung offers both a four-nanometer process and a two-nanometer SF2P process aimed at data-center chips, though the manufacturing technology for Anthropic’s possible processor has not been specifiedsiliconangle.

Samsung’s appeal is broader than logic manufacturing. The company also makes high-bandwidth memory, a key component in AI accelerators that feeds data quickly to processors during model training and servingsiliconangle. That could make Samsung a supplier across more than one layer of an Anthropic chip package if the project advances beyond exploratory work.

Nvidia dependence remains hard to escape

The effort does not mean Anthropic is stepping away from Nvidia. TechCrunch framed the move as part of a broader push by AI firms to gain some independence from the dominant GPU supplier, while noting that Nvidia remains the industry leadertechcrunch. SiliconANGLE also reported that Anthropic has committed to more than $100 billion of AWS infrastructure over the next decade, underscoring that its compute strategy still runs through major cloud partnerssiliconangle.

The timing matters because competitors are moving in the same direction. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI recently announced a custom inference processor with Broadcom, while Amazon and Google already offer custom AI chips through their cloud platformstechcrunch. For Samsung, a manufacturing role in Anthropic’s first in-house chip would be a foothold in one of the most closely watched AI infrastructure buildouts, but the talks remain early and no final chip design has been disclosedtheinformation +1.
