Elden Ring Patch 1.17 Buffs Builds Before Tarnished Pack Debut
Elden Ring version 1.17 delivers broad weapon, shield, spell and parry buffs while preparing existing platforms for the August 28 Tarnished Pack and the game’s Nintendo Switch 2 debut.

A four-year-old game gets a fresh combat pass
FromSoftware and Bandai Namco released version 1.17 for Elden Ring on August 27, bringing a broad set of balance changes to PlayStation, Xbox and PC one day before the Tarnished Pack arrives. The update is required for online play and also prepares existing editions to recognize the new paid content.bandainamcoent +1
The free changes favor buffs over nerfs. Throwing attacks for the Smithscript Axe, Smithscript Spear and Spear of the Impaler now use less stamina and hit harder, while five Perfume Bottle types gain attack power. Many greatshields receive stronger guard boost, with some also shedding weight.vice +1
Parries and neglected builds move back into view
Parry performance has been improved, and players using daggers, curved swords or small shields can act sooner after activating the skill. Storm Wall no longer consumes focus points and has also been made more effective at parrying, while Meteorite and Meteorite of Astel have shorter casting times.bandainamcoent +1
The patch applies narrower restraints to several strong options. Rakshasa’s Great Katana now delays a follow-up from a right-hand weapon when the katana is held in the left, and PvP users take more damage while attacking with it. Rugalea’s Roar deals less damage against other players, while Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay produce shorter hit reactions in competitive play.rpgsite +1
FromSoftware also adjusted loot from certain powerful enemies in the Realm of Shadow, though previously collected items will not change. PC fixes restore mouse camera control during NPC dialogue and make the keyboard-and-mouse reset option work as intended.bandainamcoent +1
A small expansion bridges old platforms and Switch 2
The Tarnished Pack launches August 28 for PlayStation, Xbox and PC at a standard European price of €4.99. It includes Heavy Knight and Idus Knight starting classes, four armor sets and three cosmetic outfits for Torrent; its content is bundled into the Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2.bandainamcoent +1
Patch notes add detail beyond the earlier product announcement: buyers can find new weapons through merchants or exploration, and two NPC invasion events appear in Caelid and Leyndell. The three steed outfits are located in Stormveil Castle, Liurnia of the Lakes and Altus Plateau.bandainamcoent +1
For players who skip the pack, the meaningful draw is the combat rebalance rather than new story content. The unusually long notes mark one of the game’s largest updates since October 2024, giving returning players reasons to reconsider shield, perfume, throwing-weapon and parry-focused builds without buying the add-on.ign +1
